Frequently asked questions

Medicare 101

What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions like End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

What are the different parts of Medicare?

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) – Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) – Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medically necessary services.
  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) – A private insurance plan that combines Part A and Part B benefits, often including additional coverage like vision, dental, and prescription drugs.
  • Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) – Helps cover the cost of prescription medications.

Do I need Medicare if I’m still working?

It depends on your current employer’s insurance. If you work for a company with 20 or more employees, you may choose to delay enrolling in Medicare Part B without penalties. However, it’s important to evaluate your options with a licensed Medicare advisor.

What is Medigap?

Medigap, or Medicare Supplement Insurance, is a private insurance policy that helps pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as deductibles and copayments.

When can I enroll in Medicare?

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Starts three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birth month, and ends three months after.
  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7, when you can make changes to your Medicare Advantage and Part D plans.
  • Special Enrollment Period (SEP): If you qualify due to specific life events, such as retiring and losing employer coverage.

How do I know if I need a Medicare Advantage plan or a Medigap policy?

Choosing between Medicare Advantage and Medigap depends on your healthcare needs, budget, and preferred access to doctors. Medicare Advantage often includes extra benefits but has network restrictions, while Medigap provides more flexibility with provider choices..

Does Medicare cover dental, vision, and hearing?

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing care. However, many Medicare Advantage plans include these benefits. You can also purchase standalone dental, vision, and hearing insurance.

Will Medicare cover me if I travel?

Original Medicare generally does not cover healthcare outside the U.S., except in limited circumstances. However, some Medicare Advantage plans and Medigap policies provide international emergency coverage.

What if I need help with long-term care?

Medicare does not typically cover long-term custodial care in a nursing home. Medicaid or long-term care insurance may be options for extended care coverage.

Enrollment & Plan Changes

Can I switch Medicare plans if my needs change?

Enrollment & Plan Changes

Yes! You can make changes during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) or a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you qualify. Your agent can assist you in identifying if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period

What happens if I miss my Initial Enrollment Period?

If you miss your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) and don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), you may have to wait until the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) and could face late enrollment penalties.

Can I change my Medicare plan after I enroll?

  • The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) (October 15 – December 7)
  • The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31)
  • A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you qualify due to life changes like moving or losing employer coverage.

Will I lose my Medicare coverage if I move?

If you have Original Medicare (Parts A & B), your coverage remains the same nationwide. However, if you have a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D (prescription drug) plan, you may need to select a new plan if you move outside your current plan’s service area.

When can I enroll in Medicare?

  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Starts three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birth month, and ends three months after.

Does Medicare cover alternative medicine or chiropractic care?

Medicare covers chiropractic care for medically necessary spinal adjustments but does not cover acupuncture (except for chronic lower back pain) or other alternative therapies like naturopathy. Some Medicare Advantage plans may offer broader coverage.

Can I have both Medicare and VA benefits?

Yes! If you have VA benefits, you can still enroll in Medicare. However, Medicare does not pay for care at VA facilities, so having both can expand your healthcare options.
